It's not very accurate, and it implies that the state (or the testmakers) are somehow the final arbiters of What Children Should Know, which is silly. It's also difficult for kids with learning difficulties or those who choose alternate learning experiences, like unschooling.

In Ohio, we can choose to submit a portfolio of the child's work to a certified teacher for evaluation, which is what I usually do. Neal and Allie wanted to know how they 'measured up' to other kids their ages last year, so we did the tests. They found them to be easy, and they did well.

The real question is whether the government has the right to require anything from homeschoolers. I can see both sides of the question. I have met a few families who didn't seem to be doing much in the way of education, but they've been few and far between.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02112089539976490759noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2510413018535300978.post-43820004010723880002010-04-13T07:59:27.089-04:002010-04-13T07:59:27.089-04:00Teaching bathroom cleaning skills for homeschool??...Teaching bathroom cleaning skills for homeschool?? I watch him learn best when doing somewhat scary science experiments with friends, looking for information about chemisty/meteorology/geography/whatever that HE wants to know, and just dinking around on his own. My younger lives to re-enact events in history, build from sculpy all the ships and planes from Pearl Harbor, and perfect scrambled eggs. I haven't added bathroom cleaning, but that's certainly a more worthy pursuit than spelling lessons (at least in the age of word processing).

They may make it to college yet. What puzzles me is simply that I did NOT find this post dated 2008 a few months ago, when I was actively searching for homeschoolers using Linux to interview. I don't understand why I missed it. I was unable to find an email link or profile profile. I hope it's OK that I'm contacting you through a public comment. I've developed an educational program for Windows called SpellQuizzer that helps children learn their spelling words without the battle that parents often have getting them to sit down and write them out while the parents dictate to them. The parent enters the child's spelling words into the software making a sound recording of each word. Then the software helps the child practice his or her words. It really helped my children with their weekly spelling lists.

I would appreciate your reviewing SpellQuizzer in Indie Education. You can learn more about the program at http://www.SpellQuizzer.com. There's a video demo you can watch at http://www.spellquizzer.com/SpellQuizzer-Demo.htm. I'd be happy to send you a complimentary license for the software. Please let me know if you are interested.

Thank you very much!

Dan Hite
TedCo Software
Dan@SpellQuizzer.comDanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11218586712316050849noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2510413018535300978.post-30274384193642507282008-06-17T20:25:00.000-04:002008-06-17T20:25:00.000-04:00Thanks for the info! Thanks for the info!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02112089539976490759noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2510413018535300978.post-40386153208263361652008-06-17T16:30:00.000-04:002008-06-17T16:30:00.000-04:00Homeschooled students are also eligible for financ...Homeschooled students are also eligible for financial aid at Charter Oak State College if they have completed a state-approved homeschooling program.

You can see more details here:
Homeschool Financial AidAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09362191564363045554noreply@blogger.com
